    Inspiration Behind the Name

Named after Margaret Hardenbroeck DeVries Philipse (c. 1630-c. 1690).

Margaret Hardenbroeck DeVries Philipse (c. 1630-c. 1690) or as we call her, “Margot”, exemplified strong, independent female authority. She was educated, independent and entrepreneurial in the 17th century, when women were not typically those things.

She fought for women’s rights under Dutch law and eventually migrated to NYC where she continued to dominate as a business owner in the shipping industry and as an advocate for women’s marital rights.
